Tarland by Deeside
Pick a pitch in an area enjoyed by royalty
Tarland by Deeside enjoys a sheltered position with an abundance of rabbits and a variety of birds - you may even see an osprey. Many wild flowers grow here, including orchids. The area has plenty of castles, including Balmoral.
- A bus trip and one connection will take you to Aberdeen - the Granite City. It has fine buildings, good shops, theatres, galleries and museums.
- Take the children to Storybook Glen, you can enjoy the Dingle Dell garden centre and gift shop.
- Walk from the Stone Age to the Roman period, and watch the re-enactments at the Archaeolink Prehistory Park, Insch.
- Visit the Grampian Transport Museum at Alford.
- Cyclists are well catered for. Try the TrailQuest at Kirkhill Forest near Banchory.
- Follow the A93 west to Ballater -the Royal Deeside Line’s railway station is now a Visitor Centre. Continue along the A93 for Balmoral, the Queen’s summer residence. Then comes Braemar Castle, famous for the Braemar Gathering in September.
- Drum and Crathes lie to the east. Go north to Kildrummy, one of the eleven castles and stately homes in Scotland’s Castle Trail.
- Aboyne is the nearest small town. It has shops, a swimming pool and a theatre. Belwade Farm is the headquarters of the International League for the Protection of Horses. At Glen Tannar, go pony trekking by the River Dee.
- Take a stroll through Drummie Woods next to the site or climb Lochnagar - the mountain that inspired the Prince of Wales’ book, The Old Man of Lochnagar.
Visitor’s opinion:
“Truly a rural site. It is kept spotlessly clean and in pristine condition. We stayed for a month.”

Did you know?
The infamous Macbeth was allegedly slain at nearby Lumphanan in 1057.
This campsite would be a great inclusion in Scotland motorhome tour. You can explore at your leisure and ‘wild camp’ if you like or find a wonderful campsite such as this one. If you wish to do this, there are many camper van rental companies throughout England and Scotland who can supply campervans, motorhomes or even large american RVs.
Typically their motorhomes are less than 12 months old and are easy to drive.
If you wish to buy a motorhome, one website with an excellent range of motorhomes for sale is http://www.motorhomesdirect.co.uk.
This website is also a great resource for finding individual motorhome hire.
